The cloud is generated as a tilted, stretched Gaussian blob so its natural axes of greatest spread aren't aligned with the view. PCA finds those axes directly from the point coordinates — the colored arrows are the actual eigenvectors of the data's covariance matrix, scaled by their standard deviation.
